Five Summer Activities to Do with Your Dog in Houston

It’s summertime in Houston. If you’re looking for activities that Fido can enjoy with you then look no further. We’ve compiled a list of 5 fun dog-friendly (and family friendly!) activities that you can all enjoy together.

1. Visit a Park or Dog Park

The Houston area boasts hundreds of parks and dogs parks that your furry family members will love. One of our favorites is the Kinder Large Dog Run and the Harriet & Joe Foster Small Dog Run at Discovery Green. The park features seating for pet parents, crushed gravel, and fountains. Please limit your time in the dog park to 45 minutes to give everyone an opportunity to participate.

Hermann Park is another great option. Dogs are allowed in the park as long as they are on leash. There are areas in the park where dogs are not allowed, such as the train, pedal boats, and the zoo, so make sure you check their website before heading out there.

2. Go to a Restaurant or Grab a Cold One

Did you know there are over 400 restaurants, bars, and breweries in the Houston are that welcome pets!? One of our favorites is Kirby Ice House. Kirby Ice House features a large selection of drinks, food trucks, and a one acre dog-friendly backyard.

Located at Memorial Park, the Arboretum is a 155 acre urban nature sanctuary that offers educational activities about the natural environment and protects native plants and animals in Houston where development threatens their survival. Pets are welcome on a leash as long as they stay on the trails or in the building lobby. Make sure you bring a leash and water for your pet.

4. Take a Day Trip to the Beach

Taking your dog to the beach requires some advanced planning. You’ll want to keep your dog safe and make sure the day is relaxing and fun. Bring food and water bowls with plenty of bottled water for them to drink. An umbrella or shade is also important on hot summer days as well as a leash, life vest, clean up bags for pet waste, and a pet first aid kit.

The Texas coast boasts numerous pet-friendly beaches. A few of our favorites are Port Aransas Beach in Port Aransas, TX, East Beach in Galveston, TX, and Stewart Beach in Galveston, TX. Most beaches have a set of rules for pets so do your research before heading out.

The Houston World Series of Dog Shows is happening at NRG from July 17-21, 2019. In addition to competitions for registered dogs, there is a variety of events for non-registered pets. You can enjoy this family friendly event with your pet as long as they are at least 6 months old and are current on vaccines including canine influenza. Make sure you bring a leash and your own water and water bowl for your pet.
